Before choosing a K2 Base Camp trek
Questions to discuss with your trekking team before committing to a remote Karakoram journey.

Choose a trek with the right support
A remote trek needs careful preparation and an experienced local team. Discuss your trekking background, route, daily walking, rest days and the support available before choosing dates. A sightseeing package is not a substitute for a trek-specific plan.
Confirm permits and arrangements
Permit requirements, fees and access arrangements depend on the route and traveller. Ask for a written explanation of who obtains approvals and which costs are included. Do not rely on an undated online guide for current permit rules.
Review equipment and porter support
Ask for a route-specific packing list and an exact explanation of camping equipment, food, porter loads and personal baggage allowance. Confirm what you must bring yourself and what can be rented.
Talk about communications and emergencies
Discuss communication coverage, guide contacts, evacuation arrangements and how itinerary decisions are made when conditions change. Seek personal travel health advice and suitable activity-specific travel insurance before departure.
Understand the complete budget
Clarify transfers, domestic flights, permits, guides, porters, equipment, meals and gratuities. Any component still marked quote required needs confirmation before a complete trip price is agreed. Routes, prices and operational details are verified with your coordinator before launch.
Ask for a preparation conversation
Share previous multi-day routes, camping experience and the kind of terrain you have encountered. Ask which parts of the proposed programme are most demanding and how the team assesses readiness. A generic fitness label does not explain glacier travel, consecutive walking days or the effect of remote overnight arrangements on your comfort.
Audit the equipment agreement
Separate personal equipment from group equipment and hired items. Confirm sizes, condition, collection arrangements and responsibility for damage or loss where hire is involved. Discuss luggage limits before buying or packing additional gear. Request clarification for unfamiliar technical items instead of assuming every base-camp itinerary requires the same equipment as a climbing expedition.
Understand decisions in the mountains
Ask who has authority to change the route, what communication can realistically be used and how a turnaround decision affects the rest of the group. Confirm the financial arrangements for unplanned accommodation, additional support or an evacuation. Have your insurer confirm the exact itinerary's cover; do not interpret a broad adventure label as a guarantee.
