Choose a route that fits
Talk to your guide about your experience and fitness before choosing a trek. Build in time to rest and adapt your plans to conditions.
Pack thoughtfully
Layers, comfortable footwear, sun protection, and a reusable bottle are a useful starting point. Your team can provide a route-specific packing list.
Stay flexible
Weather and road conditions can change a mountain itinerary. Allow some flexibility and follow the guidance of your local team.
Begin with an honest starting point
Describe the walking you currently do, the terrain you know and how you feel after consecutive active days. A day hike, a camping trek and a technical climbing expedition require different arrangements. Ask the team to explain the proposed route in ordinary language, including surfaces, sustained climbs, overnight facilities and the options for turning back.
Check what support really means
A supported package should explain who guides, what equipment is supplied and which bags you carry. Ask how meals and drinking water are arranged, what communication is available and who makes decisions if the weather changes. Clarify whether equipment hire is included and inspect the agreed kit before setting off.
Practise the everyday details
Try your footwear and daypack on familiar walks before departure. Learn how to pack layers and frequently used items so you can reach them without emptying the bag. Request an activity-specific checklist rather than buying equipment because it appears on an expedition photograph. Seek qualified advice for health questions and personal suitability.
Define a good outcome
Agree that enjoying the journey and returning comfortably matter more than completing a named endpoint. Discuss what happens if one traveller needs a shorter day or an earlier return. Keep onward commitments flexible enough for the programme's contingency plan, and confirm any additional costs that a change could involve.
